The Roanoke Rapids Naval Air Station was established in 1917 as an auxiliary naval air station. It became a full-fledged naval air station in 1942 and was renamed Naval Air Station Roanoke Rapids on 1 July 1943. The air station was redesignated Naval Air Station Albemarle on 15 October 1945 and it assumed its present name, Naval Air Station Albemarle, on 1 January 1946. The NAS Albemarle served the Atlantic Fleet until 1988 when it shifted to the Pacific Fleet. On 14 December 1991, NAS Albemarle transferred its operations to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey and it is no longer operational as a naval air station.
