Salisbury is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is the county seat of Union County. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe metropolitan area. The town was founded by English colonists in 1795 and named for George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon in Virginia. The first post office was established in 1802. The first courthouse was built in 1811 and served as the temporary seat of government until a new courthouse was built in 1836. In 1865, Salisbury became the capital of North Carolina when Raleigh became the state capital. In 1903, General William Tilden accepted an invitation from President Taft to become Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War – an event that helped promote Salisbury as a cultural center for eastern North Carolina and Georgia during Reconstruction period. The last post office closed on December 15, 2009; however, its ZIP code remains unchanged because it served as part of Buncombe County until January 1st 2020 when it became part of Union County effective with that date's local implementation of software updates which caused all mail service within Buncombe County to be discontinued effective February 14th 2020 as a result of changes made to how those services are delivered including switching over to USPS' E-mail solution known as "NONstandard". It should be noted that this change happened retroactively starting February 14th 2020 which means any letters received before then will not have been properly processed or delivered--in other words anything prior to February 14th 2020 will still be unprocessed and undelivered!
