Salisbury coffee has been a part of the community for over a hundred years. The first coffee shop in town was opened in 1868 by W. H. Goodrich and his sons. In 1896, Harry and James Robertson opened the Salisbury Coffee Shop on Market Street. The business continued to be run by the Robertson family until it closed in 1962. In 1993, Bob Cavanaugh purchased the business from the Robertson family and reopened it as Bob's Coffee House. Since then, Bob's Coffee House has become one of the most well-known and popular coffee shops in Salisbury.Bob's Coffee House is also home to many local artisans who create unique cupcakes and pastries every day of the week!
Salisbury is a city in the state of North Carolina, United States. The population was 31,872 at the 2010 census. Salisbury is located on the Salisbury River and is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Salisbury was first settled by Algonquian Native Americans in 1757 when they moved from their original territory near what is now Monroe County to what is now Surry County. In 1761, Major James Robertson founded a small frontier town named for him on land he had purchased from the Cherokee Indians. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of over 120 people. By 1810, however, Robertson's town had disappeared behind forested hills and renamed as Salisbury after General Nathaniel Johnson Salter who fought in the American Revolution under Washington. In 1819, John Singleton Blair established a small plantation called "Blair's Mills" on present day Tryon Creek just east of present day downtown Salisbury. Blair expanded his cotton plantations into what would become known as Upper Cumberland County in 1830 and began to sell goods developed on his plantations directly to consumers throughout North Carolina through merchants such as Elijah Southwick (1785-1852) and John Hargrave (1789-1868). These early sales helped support Blair's business interests which continue up until this day; many items sold today including underwear are made here in spite of efforts by local manufacturers to move production elsewhere because of high labor costs associated with traditional textile production methods. In 1840, following Indian removal policies implemented by President Jackson, about 12% of all white residents living within 10 miles of Raleigh were required to leave their homes and migrate southward into new lands granted to them at Ridgecrest or other points beyond the reach of Indian settlement – an process known as “ Removal” - although some Cherokees continued to live among whites even after they were removed. Many African Americans became displaced during this time period as well; one estimate puts the number at between 25% and 50%. According to historian Mara Ballou Brown: "Many poor blacks fled northward during those years; Wade Hampton estimated that 'tens thousand black men perished during Removal'". One group who did not flee were members of Congress led by Andrew Johnson who leased 4 million acres (24 km2) along portions of both sides of then-called “the Great Dismal Swamp” - also know today as Wake Forest University property - for $1 per acre due pressure from abolitionists concerned about slave trade potential across these open areas." Families left behind basic needs like food and shelter unprovided while away at Removal but soon learned how to farm using modern techniques brought over with European settlers such as building roads, railsroads and canals which facilitated transportation needed for agricultural productivity; this increased demand caused prices for staple crops like rice, cornmeal and tobacco skyrocketing making these products unavailable outside markets much later than they would have otherwise been allowed under more primitive systems such as subsistence agriculture practiced before Removal/Migration happened largely without government intervention prior thereto which precluded any sort market access whatsoever thereby perpetuating poverty within newly designated free states created following America's independence from Great Britain via revolution & war proceedings.)
