Salisbury is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Salisbury has beenoki called "The Ancient City" because it was founded by ancient Native Americans in 1751 as an archaeological site on Catawba River. The town was chartered in 1807 and named for General William Johnston Salisbury, a British general who fought in the American Revolutionary War and afterward served as governor of North Carolina. In 1825, Salisbury became one of the two towns in Alamance County to become incorporated as a village; the other was Concordia. In 1886, Salshire burned down several buildings due to an overuse of fire hazard devices by local residents living adjacent to the town's military barracks. After the fire, Townspeople built new homes and businesses around what had been destroyed.
