The bulk of its residents are black, but there are also a number of white residents as well. The history of Shelby begins with the arrival of Africans in what is now North Carolina more than two centuries ago. One group led by Chief John Aiken settled near present-day Shelby on December 12th, 1792 under leadership from Captain Benjamin Banneker . They were forced out by Native Americans and their property taken over by slave owners in what became known as the Trail Of Tears. Many African Americans who had been freed from slavery followed these eventful years northward into new territory which included parts of what is now North Carolina and Alabama .
