Shelby is a town in Shelby County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Murfreesboro–Greenville Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Shelby County was James Fenton in 1811. In 1820, four men named Drury and Blount founded the town of Spring Hill on Hwy 64 east of Varnell. When that community dissolved in 1824, Fenton's people moved to what is now Shelby County and named it after their ancestor John Shelby who had served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). There were also settlers from Virginia and Georgia who arrived around this time. A post office called SpringHill was established in 1825; it closed due to lack of mail volume in 1830. A new post office called Varnell was established on July 1, 1830, by order of Governor Tryon; however it too closed due to low mail volumes two years later. In 1840, surveyors named Thomas Foster and Wm Caldwell discovered coal near present day Hendersonville when they visited that area for mineral surveys; this led to the first oil well being drilled here on December 5th of that year by S C Pritchett & Co.. The first gasoline station in America was opened at nearby Peachtree Corners by J I White on April 2nd 1909. This made Shelby County one of the early areas to benefit from petroleum development with many small businesses starting up around this time including Pickens Manufacturing Company which manufactured phonographs records back then and still does today! On October 15th 1912 citizens registered their opposition to an act passed by General Assembly known as "An Act To Render Unconstitutional The State Election Laws" which would have repealed certain sections of state election laws dating back to 1861! This event helped spark what eventually became known as the Great Race for Democracy which saw more than 20 candidates running for countywide offices across 10 local districts! Ultimately only 3rd District Congressman John E Smith received over 50% of the vote against all competition! All other candidates managed under 40% each so this victory represented a major accomplishment for democracy right before our eyes!!
