TheSmithfield Army Depot was a major center of military munitions production in the early 1800s. It functioned as an armory, magazine and artillery range during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The depot closed its doors in 1857, but it reopened in 1881 as Smithfield Armory. The arsenal was active until 1918 when it was sold to General Electric Company. The site now houses Smithfield Municipal Airport. The first military munitions production took place at Smithfield Army Depot during the American Revolution. Several cannons were produced here, including one that was used by General George Washington during his march from Alexandria to Stonewall Jackson's army at Manassas Junction on July 21, 1776. During the First World War, Smithfield Armory played an important role in manufacturing ammunition for both European and American forces. During World War I, it produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition. In 1918, General Electric Co purchased the armory from General Motors Corporation and turned it into a gunnery school known as GE Arsenal School of Technology (later renamed GE Tech). This facility manufactured guns such as machineguns, pistols and rifles for use by the United States armed forces throughout World War II. After World War II ended, GE Arsenal School of Technology became part of Bell Helicopter Corp., which still operates there today. GE Arsenal School of Technology is also home to North Carolina State University's Center for Advanced Research in Ammunition Science & Technology (CARAST). This facility manufactures bullets and projectiles for use by law enforcement agencies around the world.

The Smithfield, North Carolina Confederate army gift history dates back to the early 1800s. During this time, General Joseph Johnston and his troops fought against the Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley. After the Battle of Antietam, General Johnston ordered his troops to move south into central Virginia. There they engaged in a series of successful battles against Union forces until they were forced to retreat towards Chesterfield County. From here, they continued their fight by besieging and then conquering Fort Fisher. In 1864, General Johnston was replaced by Jubal Early and his troops invaded South Carolina. They failed to take advantage of Early's lack of resources and were quickly routed at the Battle of Moultrie Hill. With Johnston no longer able to lead his troops effectively, many Confederate soldiers decided to flee northward instead. This eventually led to Early's victory at Gettysburg and the end of the Civil War in 1865
Smithfield is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 8,695 at the 2010 census. Smithfield is home to the world's largest hog market and one of the most important pork-processing centers in the United States. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1786, and until recently it served as their principal center for processing hogs and bacon. The first recorded mention of Smithfield comes from Deed Book 2:6, which cites "a place called Smithfield" among other places where goods were to be gathered for shipment back to Scotland. By 1800, Smithfield had become an important center for pork production due to its location on the river and its close proximity to southern England. In 1824, John Crouch erected a stockade around his Hoggery Plant in order to protect his pigs from thieves who intent on harming or stealing their meat. At that time, hogging was still an early stage of livestock husbandry and there were no means by which farmers could monitor or track their herds day-and-date; therefore, theft remained a major threat to farmer's pig holdings. In 1892, Jno Biddle opened what would become known as "the world's first grocery store." At that time groceries were not common items sold withinsmithfields limits; rather they consisted mainly of flour, sugarcane syrup and tobacco products. However, given that this store became such a success and helped promote grocery shopping within the small townspeople began marketing themselves as "The Gros Ventres". This name stuck because it sounded like something very special - like somebody who could get your stomach growling with hunger just by talking about them! Today much attention is paid towards hogs being processed here at Smithfield - including both fresh meat (hogs) as well as frozen carcasses (bacon). It should be noted that while bacon has been an important part of America's diet since before Independence Day (July 4th), hogs have now become one of North Carolina’s top exports due primarily to advancements made in agricultural technology over recent decades; specifically advances made in feedstocks such as cornmeal and soybean oil which make up 90% of hog production today!
