However, due to bad weather and routing by Confederate cavalry units under Lieutenant Colonel John Lattimore (the officer who supervised Pemberton's movements), Pemberton's entire force arrived too late at night near orderlies' encampments near mile marker 11 (now milepost 116) on Highway 156 east of Carrboro on April 16th 1865;[1] all but 4500 men were killed or captured during what became known as "The Battle of Deep Bottom".[2][3][4] Aftermath: Aftermath: More than 400 dead soldiers from both armies are interred at Deep Bottom Cemetery today--more than any other battlefield in America.[5] more than any other battlefield in America."

Smithfield, North Carolina is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Smithfield is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is one of the most important economic center in that region. The downtown district has been designated a national historic district by the National Park Service. The first mention of Smithfield comes from an Englishman who named it after his farmstead on Catawba River which he bought in 1695. Smithfield was founded as a small village on July 8, 1795 by John Boyd and his family near what is now known as Pembroke Road and Interstate 385 just east of Chapel Hill. In 1811, Daniel Boone moved to this area from Kentucky and began operations as a trader with Indian traders before eventually settling here permanently in 1826. From then until 1865 when Rutherford County was created, Smithfield was its only incorporated community. In 1870, Jno Blythe started raising cottonseed in what later became known as "Boyd's Patch". This led to Cooley & Company being founded about 1880 which became one of the largest cotton seed companies in America; it still operates out of Smithfield today. The discovery of coal veins near present-day Clayton made local businesses such as Gainsborough Coal Supply Company (now part of Peabody Energy) very interested in this new resource and made possible for some people to build up large families during this time period due to easy access to foodstuffs needed for sustenance during these tough times. An early millinery shop opened on Main Street also called Gainsborough Millinery School at 602 Main Street which functioned until 1909 when it closed because competition got too much for operations managed by Mrs Pollard alone while other students took over instruction following prohibition raids on their stores by agents working for Attorney General Tillman resulting in many prosecutions including that against Mrs Pollard herself leading to her being forced into bankruptcy protection status with assets seized by creditors Several years later she reopened the school but again closed due to lackadaisical management after World War I ended However another business operated out of her house until her death around 1955 before finally closing down completely around 1975 Another millinery shop opened up on Gaston Avenue across from Ravenhill Baptist Church around 1912-13 under name "Queen's lace" however it didn't quite catch on like Queen's lace had hoped so they sold it soon afterwards To make way for what would become Interstate 285 two blocks south (in present day Johnston Square), four pickups were built between 1927-1928 providing basic services such as water service and power until 1951 when local voters decided not to allow any more trucks onto I-285 without first getting permits unavailable prior even though no surface damage existed At long last I-285 brought us all closer together right where we stand today with many old landmarks still standing
