The National Guard of Smithfield, North Carolina has been a part of the United States military since 1775. The unit was activated in 1942 as the 1st Battalion, Carolina Regiment and participated in World War II. Following the war, the battalion was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment, National Guard. The regiment served in Vietnam and then returned home to Smithfield in 1973. In 1978, the battalion was again redesignated as the 4th Battalion, 9th Regiment NC National Guard and served until 1992 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts. However, it is not clear if this disbandment happened because of its poor performance or because of regulations that prohibited members from serving abroad. After years of debates about what to do with the unit, it finally came back into existence on October 2nd 2006 when it became part of District 10-5 of North Carolina's State Military Forces Division under Commander Lt Colonel Gail A. Powers effective October 3rd 2006 Since its inception as a national guard unit in 1942 there have been many changes to how national guard members serve their state and country. One change that has occurred over time is that soldiers have become more involved with community service projects such as helping out at local schools or filling volunteering roles at natural disaster relief efforts. Additionally, some soldiers have even chosen career paths within the military while others have stayed active through retirement or donation programs such as those offered by The John F Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation Today, there are over 6500 soldiers who serve with distinction in accordance with Article I Section 8(a)of the US Constitution which states "the Soldier shall be kept constantly on full pay." This allows forSoldiers from all walks of life to join forces together for mutual support during times of emergency or peacekeeping missions around our nation or internationally A large percentage (78%)of troops serving today were veterans who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq both before and after these wars were declared over Additionally nearly half (45%)are women Veterans who frequently participate in combat operations across multiple theaters
The National Guard is a military reserve force in the United States. The National Guard is composed of citizen soldiers who are not drafted into the military and are not limited by any specific service requirements. In addition, the militia status of the National Guard allows it to act as a self-defense force in times of national emergency. The Militia Act of 1818 created the National Guard by merging the State militias into one body and giving them certain rights and privileges. Today, there are an estimated 1 million active members in the National Guard, including 500 thousand citizens who serve in state militias while also providing military support to local authorities during emergencies or other emergencies declared by President Donald Trump. The growth of the National Guard has been due in part to federal dollars that have been allocated for its organization and training since 2006. This money has helped increase recruitment efforts for both volunteer units and full-time units, making it easier for people from all walks of life to join up with their community defense forces. Since 9/11, there have been numerous calls for additional resources to be devoted towards the nation’s militia forces, specifically those within state militias which have traditionally served as backup security for major metropolitan areas such as New York City or Los Angeles. While some states (such as Texas) have responded with expansions of their own militaries, most states continue to rely on donations from individual citizens or businesses who support patriotic programming on behalf of the guard units statewide. One such program is “National Defense week” which occurs every September 10th through 14th throughout every state across America highlighting how important it is for individuals to donate time and money towards programs designed at bolstering national security across all levels – from home front through our communities here at school! Smithfield is a town in N.C. It lies on the edge of the Piedmont region, 10 miles southeast of Chapel Hill and 30 miles northeast of Raleigh. The population was 5,662 at the 2010 census. Smithfield was founded in 1785 as a small farming community by Welshmen who had come to North Carolina to work on plantations. The town grew rapidly after the 1821 arrival of railroadroads that made it easier to get goods and people to markets in nearby cities. Smithfield became an important agricultural center, supplying local consumers with goods from surrounding farms and processing cotton into fabric, fiber, meat and eggs. After World War II, industry took over much of the town's economy, but agriculture remains a majorstay of the community's social life and economy. In recent years, Smithfield has undergone significant development: it now hosts a large hotel complex, several shopping centers and a number of housing developments; it also has begun plans for an airport which would make it one of the larger regional airports in southern North Carolina.
The National Guard has a long and rich history of giving gifts. The first gift from the National Guard was a rifle to Colonel John Chilton, commander of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers. The Second Brigade, Third Division, New York National Guard was founded in 1881. In 1903, the regiment donated an automatic rifle to the City of New York Police Department. In 1916, the regiment donated an M1917 Mauser Rifle to the United States Army Quartermaster Corps. In 1922, the regiment donated an M2 BAR to Camp Hill Armory in Pennsylvania. In 1948, the regiment donated an M1 Garand Rifle to Bethlehem Steel Company in Bethlehem Township, Pennsylvania. On July 4th 1949, Governor Thomas Dewey presented Colonel James Wirtz with a Colt 1951 carbine as a gift from the National Guardsmen of New Jersey. The next year on October 1st 1950 Governor Robert Fenton presented Colonel James Wirtz with a Colt Model 1951 pistol as a gift from the National Guardsmen of Maine. On October 15th 1952 Lieutenant General Omar Bradley presented Colonel James Wirtz with a Colt Model 1911 Pistol as a gift from members of his brigade for their military service during World War II. Finally on May 2nd 1955 Colonel James Wirtz received his Special Forces Service Medal from President Eisenhower for his participation in Operation Neptune’s Spear which led to success against North Vietnam
