Southern Pines is part of the Wilmington-New Bern-Chatham, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southern Pines is settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 18th century. The first European tosight Southern Pine was on July 10, 1766 when Captain James Robertson and his party of men traveled downriver from Charlotte to explore this new area which they dubbed "Piney Woods." The Scots-Irish settlers who founded Southern Pines chose a location that would provide them with good access to resources and farmland. They built their homes along the Susquehanna River and soon began trading goods with surrounding villages. They also built churches, schools and other government buildings. In 1810, Northern Governor Tryon ordered all British subjects living within three miles of Chapel Hill to leave for fear that they would collaborate with the Creek Indians in their war against American forces. This order caused many Scottish- Irish farmers to move away from their original land choice and form new settlements around Chapel Hill including Southern Pines. The town's origins date back even further than that - its namesake comes from a Battle of Southern Pines fought between General Robert Easley's Confederate Army and Union Army on June 11th 1861 near what is now known as Park Road/Old Hickory Boulevard in Chatham County. Aftermath of this battle left over one hundred Yankee soldiers dead while almost two hundred Confederate soldiers were captured or killed - an event which has been referred to as one of the bloodiest battles ever fought in America. As a result of this encounter local residents adopted Easley's nickname "The Butcher" due to his actions during the fight
