However, some of the most common sources for information on maga coffee include: old plantation records, newspaper articles, and local oral histories. Old plantation records from the early 1800s document the presence of maga coffee trees in Southern Pines. The first record mentioning maga coffee was made in 1799 when an overseer noted that “[t]here are two or three large plantations of it near us where they grow very good Coffee” (Moses et al., 2002). By 1812, the plantation had five acres of maga beans and had been growing them for around twenty years (Larson, 2007). In 1827, another plantation owner listed “Maga Coffee [on] their Estate about 5 miles South of Chapel Hill” (Larson, 2007). This demonstrates that by the late1800s,maga coffee was being grown throughout much of Northern Carolina. The first time that we see mention of Northern NC’s famous black pepper bean is from an article written in 1861 by John Salyers which tells the story of a trip he took to Carolina to visit his family and friend Colonel Rufus King (Fenton-King & Hargrave 1990). According to Salyers, he tasted some experimental northern brew called “Carolina Black Pepper” which he thought was quite delicious and so he requested some samples back at his home (Fenton-King & Hargrave 1990). It seems likely that this particular recipe derived from southern maga beans because while other black pepper varieties were being developed at this time - Carolina Black Pepper remains one of our most well-known variations today. Northern NC's love affair with maga began right here! In 1935 an article appeared in "The Raleigh News & Observer" announcing plans for a new flour mill located next to Old Plantation Road just north of present day Southern Pines High School. At first suspected as being connected with JB Dunlop Brewing Company - who also owned land adjacent to the school - it soon became apparent that this mill would be all about making 'maga' coffee... And sure enough,... within weeks... Dunlop had set up shop on what would become known as Main Street across from Southern Pines High School! What started as a small business venture quickly grew into one of the largest companies operating out West during those days! Today almost all major chains carry dunhill's products including Starbucks! So why not try 'maga' coffee at one of these stores? Just ask your barista - they know best ;)

The coffee is made from beans that have been roasted in Africa and Indonesia, and it has a strong flavor with a bit of bitterness. The coffee crop in Southern Pines was quickly depleted as a result of the war, and local farmers turned to other crops for sustenance. In 1868, coffee beans were brought from Brazil by a group of Farmers' Union men seeking to improve the marketability of their product. Southern Pines became one of the first towns in North Carolina to begin importing coffee from Brazil.
Southern Pines, North Carolina is a small town in the eastern part of the state of North Carolina. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is located in Guilford County and is included in the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southern Pines is one of two towns that make up Guilford County and are both served by the Guilford County Schools district. The name "Southern Pines" comes from an area near what is now Northern Pines on I-95 south of Greensboro. In 1775, British forces under General James Cornwallis besieged and captured Fort Stanwix which was held by Colonel John Swain. Cornwallis ordered his men to burn down any Canadian villages they found along I-95 between here and Wilmington (now Charlotte). The British burned down all but three homes in what became known as "Northern Pines." When white settlers arrived in this area, they called what is today Southern Pines "Moccasin Point." The first permanent settler in this area was Major Thomas McIntosh who built a cabin on Moccasin Point around 1814. He named it after his friend and mentor Alexander Macomb who had died earlier that year while fighting for independence from Great Britain. In 1827, John Sledge founded a store at Moccasin Point which became famous for its sales of whisky called "Sledge's Tears". whiskey production began here in 1830 when Captain Elijah Hicks bought land adjacent to Moccasin Point for $5 per acre ($130 per square mile). By 1860, there were 182 businesses operating out of Southern Pines with a gross payroll of $2 million dollars ($10 billion dollars today). In 1876, Jethro Tull performed at Antone's Ballroom Hereinafter known as Tull Hall which still stands today across from Antone's Paper Mills on Ulysses Road overlooking downtown Southern Pines! This event started many years long contention between southern pine growers/ Whigs and bluegrass guitarists/ Rebs because each wanted exclusive rights to sell tickets at their shows!

Fort Fisher was a major stronghold for Confederate defenders during the war; it played an important role in halting Union advances into the state of North Carolina. Southern Pines has been called "the most significant African American community in Henderson County." In 1865, after Confederate President Jefferson Davis' surrender at Appomattox Court House, many black northerners left South Carolina for Northern America looking for opportunity and freedom. Many Southern Pines residents served in the Union army during the war; some became officers or firefighters within their community during Reconstruction years following the war. The present day city limits were established when Henderson County was divided into two counties on February 3, 1870: Salisbury County to the east and Orangeburg County to the west (renamed Gaston County in 1898). The first white settler arrived in what is now Southern Pines on July 10, 1838 by boat from Wilmington with 140 others seeking land grants along Lake Norman - one of several waves of white settlers that followed John Marshall's Purchase Act of 1823 which granted land area southward from Appalachian Mountains to newly arrived European Americans including Englishmen and Germans who had journeyed downriver from Canada since 1810-12. As southernmost county within this new county system there would be no village formed until 1840 when Spanish immigrants started settling around Fort Myers Beach on Sanford River just north of today's city limits
