The Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and rescue services on the North Carolina coastline since 1917. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the citizens of the state by providing a secureness in maritime affairs, enforcing maritime laws and protecting coastal interests. In 1951, a ice skater was gifted to the Coast Guardsmen at Petty Officer's Mate First Class Edward A. Coyle post office in Spring Lake, North Carolina. This gift symbolized practical assistance for those who often have to skate on icy beaches during wintertime. In 1966, an ice cream truck was gifted to marines posted at Camp Lejeune in Wilmington. The truck served as an outreach program for Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune and helped raise money for local charities through donations from soldiers stationed there. In 1978, a boat named "Nina" was donated to the Coast Guard by Mrs. Hilda Sutherlin Noyes of Wilmington NC after her husband lost his job as captain of a fishing vessel while out fishing off Cape May Point NJ due to bad weather conditions offshore. Nina became available when her owner retired from fishing and decided not to sell it because she did not want it used as a motorboat/skipper vessel anymore but stored indoors until needed again! In 1990, another boat called "Sandy" was donated by Mrs .Linda Stallings after being wrecked onshore near Elizabeth City Beach FL while being towed back into port after hitting rocks with her anchor chains ashore! Sandy became available when her owner had too many children growing up so he could no longer use it for pleasure boats only!

The Auxiliary was founded on December 15, 1936 by Captain James A. Cook and First Lieutenant Harry D. Waite with the goal of improving relations between the Coast Guard and local businesses and citizens. Today, the Auxiliary provides gift assistance to over 2000 residents in Spring Lake and surrounding communities.
Spring Lake is a small, isolated community in Surry County, North Carolina. It is located on the edge of the Pisgah National Forest and lies just off Interstate 85. The population of Spring Lake was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Spring Lake is known for its large spring that provides water to many homes and businesses in the area. The town also has a post office and a library. The name "Spring Lake" comes from two different places: one was near where the lake now stands, while another was located about three miles east of town on State Road 211. Both names were given because of the abundant growth of wild ferns around the spring at those locations. The first people to live in Spring Lake were white settlers who arrived in 1827. They built houses on what is now Main Street. By 1845, there were 21 residents living in Spring Lake. In 1909, when North Carolina became a state, SpringLake became part of Surry County and had 1,521 residents

In 1933, the Coast Guard was created as a merger of the United States Navy's Office of Aeronautics and Fisheries and the Customs Service. The Coast Guard is headquartered in Boston, MA. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect our nation's coasts, seas and airspace from illegal immigration, terrorism, piracy and other threats to public safety. In 1934, Congress passed an act that established the Coast Guard as a component of the Department of Defense. Since then, Congress has continuously revised and amended Coast Guard statutes to reflect changes in technology and society. For example, in 1987 Congress renamed the Revenue Cutter Service (RFC) as the National Security Cutter Service (NSCS). In 1996 NSCS became part of DHS when President Clinton signed Executive Order 13425 creating Homeland Security Investigations which merged into DHS on July 1st 2002. Today there are over 5800 career members who serve aboard USCGCs including 600 officers dedicated to homeland security missions The history of gift giving goes back centuries! The town of Spring Lake was founded in 1785 by large landowners named Johnston and Letcher. The name was chosen to honor the spring that lay at the center of the town. The first store opened in 1811, and a post office was established in 1814. In 1850, school districts were formed within Spring Lake, and a jail was built in 1857. A gristmill was built on the north side of Spring Lake in 1865, and a sawmill was built on the south side of Spring Lake in 1898. In 1907, coal mining began operations in Spring Lake, and production increased until 1949 when it ceased due to environmental concerns. In 1961-1963, an experimental air pollution control plant operated in Spring Lake for two years as part of Floyd's Hope Regional Airport project. In 1975-1977, another experimental air pollution control plant operated in Spring Lake for three years as part of Nantucket Air Pollution Control Station Project. In 1984,SpringLake became home to North Carolina's first theme park when Dominion Land Company acquired land adjacent to the springs for development into an amusement park called Kingdom Come II Parkland which eventually closed down around 1992 after being cited with numerous problems including $8 million worth of Defective Devices & Electrical Equipment; Failure To Dispose Of Over 900 pounds Of Toxic Gases; Violation Of State Emission Standards;and many more violations
