The gun was used as the basis for the first ever Claymore mine hunt in 1893. In 1898, Hawkins donated a shotgun to the town of Spring Lake and it is still present today at the town hall. On November 2nd, 1911, Lula Jeter Ivey gave her husband Homer Ivey a single-shot muzzleloader named “Smokey” which they had both been wanting since they were children. Smokey was acquired by Homer from Frank Cramer of Chapel Hill who also bought him two shotguns in 1907 and 1908 respectively. In 1951, James Epps gifted his Winchester Model 1895 Rifle to the town of Spring Lake after purchasing it from Walter Hickey at an auction held at Morehead City Hall on October 15th, 1950. The rifle has been in continuous use by the townspeople ever since and is currently stored at Town Hall where it can be seen every day during hunting season!
