In 1865, Union soldiers burned down a cabin near Spring Lake while on their march through the area during the Civil War. After the war, farmers started growing crops around Spring Lake and began using more water from the springs for irrigation purposes. In 1795, the area now known as Spring Lake was part of Alamance County. In 1821, it became part of Henderson County. In 1867, it became part of Price County. In 1907, Price County was divided into two parts: one portion became Rockingham County and the other portion became Henderson County. On July 1, 1907, Spring Lake became a part of Henderson County. On January 1, 1930, Rockingham County was created from portions of Price and Henderson Counties. On October 15, 1935, Spring Lake was transferred to Rockingham County effective January 1st.
