Statesville is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,483 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Statesville was founded in 1775 by Lieutenant Colonel John Carteret as a small settlement on the Pee Dee River. The first settler named Statesville was George Washington and his wife Martha Custis. In 1805, when the First Seminole War ended, General James Ketchum appointed John Yancey to lead an expedition against the Seminoles in what is now Cabarrus County. Yancey's force destroyed most of their tribal holdings in what is now Statesville; this event helped solidify American control over that area for years to come. In 1821, Congressman Daniel Webster proposed that Congress add Cabarrus County to Tennessee as a new state within the Union because there were many experienced soldiers and farmers living in that region who could be utilized in fighting against Native Americans and other challenges posed by the formation of America as a nation. When Tennessee seceded from the Union, CabarrusCounty became part of North Carolina under its own government with Webster as its first governor. The town of Statesville experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following World War II due to its position at one end of Interstate 85 - just outside Charlotte - and its easy access to goods and services available throughout much of South Carolina and Georgia thanks to Interstate 95 (the main north-south highway then). After reconstruction ended in 1965, industries moved away from statesville but has slowly returned since 2000 when UNC began construction on their campus here which will create thousands more jobs over time!

North Carolina Highway 16 passes through Statesville and leads to both Raleigh and Chapel Hill. The first settler in present-day Statesville was George Washington who arrived in 1784. The town was platted in 1811 by John Hance and James Witherspoon. In 1821, Statesville became the capital of Cumberland County, serving as such until 1827 when Raleigh took over that role. In 1838, Statesville became an offshoot of Henderson County when that county was created from parts of Johnston and Davidson counties. In 1860, Cumberland County merged with Henderson to form Vance County which then merged with Rutherford County in 1924 (the final merger). In 1936, stateshood for Johnston and Wake counties were proposed but voted down because most residents desired to remain within their respective counties rather than merge into a new state. However, due to this vote, Statesville became the first town in North Carolina to gain statehood on November 2nd – just one day after Durham! Statesville has always been an important center for trade as it is home to several large mills along its main street - including J&J Bedding & Mattress Mills and American Weavers Mill - as well as several smaller businesses and restaurants.>>
