Statesville is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Area. The first settler in what is now Statesville was John Tryon in 1794. His land included present-day Gaston and Randolph counties. Tryon named his community after himself, statesville being Scots-Irish for "a pleasant place." A post office was established at Statesville on April 12, 1814, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 13, 1907. In 1870, James Fenton organized a Baptist church there with six members; he named it Fenton Avenue Baptist Church after himself. In 1875, Heman Cason organized a Methodist church there with twenty-five members; he also named it Fenton Avenue Methodist Church after himself. The first school in Statesville opened on November 12th of that year by Mrs. Emily King under the name of Jackson Schoolhouse; the school operated for one year before being closed due to budget problems and reopening as First Presbyterian School on February 9th of 1876 under the name "Pioneering Presbyterian". For many years this school served as the only postsecondary educational institution within miles of Statesville proper (although students could attend nearbypublic schools). Eventually both churches merged into one new church called First Presbyterian Church—Statesvillians Inc., which still exists today as an independent religious denomination with its own congregations throughout Central NC). Some early settlers were: Elijah Lovejoy (1801), Ebenezer Sprague (1802), Jonas Sibley (1803), Peter Mills (1805), James Hardwick (1807) and Rufus Popejoy Jr.(c1787 - January 10th 1878). Statesville is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,636 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County and one of the largest towns in the state. The first permanent settler in what would become Statesville was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1788. A year later, John Patterson moved from Scotland and began to cultivate land east of Statesville on the Cumberland River. In 1802, George Washington visited Rutherford County and noted that "this [county] has been improved by industry and improvement." In 1818, Rutherford County was created from parts of Durham and Mecklenburg counties. The new county had a population of only 3,000 people but it quickly grew with an influx of settlers. In 1825, Donald Davidson settled in what would become Statesville and built the first store there. By 1830, there were over 20 stores open in Statesville! In 1830-31, local resident Zabriskie built a log mill on Catawba Creek for grinding cornmeal into flour which he sold to farmers throughout western North Carolina. This mill continued operation until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1840-41, John Hays founded a Missionary Baptist Church in Statesvil
Statesville was founded by Captain John Marshall in 1781. It was named for the state of North Carolina, which had been won by George Washington in the American Revolution. The town became a major junction on the great road between Raleigh and Charlotte. Statesville grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1810, it had become an important center for trade with nearby Raleigh and Edgecombe counties. In 1829, Statesville became the first town in North Carolina to be incorporated as a city.
