In 1916, Mrs. John Witherspoon donated a pump-action shotgun to Statesville for use as a school resource gun. This weapon served as a valuable addition to the community during World War I because it could be fired quickly and accurately at targets out of reach for enemy soldiers. After the war, Mrs. Witherspoon continued to provide funding for purchasing new shotguns in Statesvilie until her death in 1951. At her request, all future shotguns purchases were made through the Citizens Second Amendment League (CSAL). Today, CSAL is still responsible for providing financial support to organizations that promote individual freedom of speech and assembly within our community. The first handgun purchase in Statesville occurred in 1923 when Clarence Pell bought an 8-shot revolver from Harry Hensley of Charlotte, North Carolina. Pell was an attorney who worked at The Federal Law Offices on Patton Street across from Meyers’s store then known as “The Gun Shop” . Statesville is a city in Davie County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Statesville was founded in 1855 by Scots-Irish settlers from County Tyrone and became an agricultural center with a cotton gin and distillery.
