The Marines of the 2nd Marine Division deployed in Statesville, North Carolina in 1944. The unit was originally organized on December 1, 1943 as a Headquarters and Service Company. In early 1944 the company became a battalion and was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines on January 1, 1944. On February 14th the battalion was redesignated as the 4th Battalion 5th Marines and ordered to amphibious combat duty at Peleliu during World War II. The battalion fought in combat from February 15-March 9 1945 under Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell. After returning from Okinawa the battalion reformed at San Diego beachhead on March 25th before being ordered back to Okinawa for occupation duty until 1946 when it returned home to Statesville. In 1948 the battalion again deployed to Japan where it served with distinction until its return home in 1954. From 1954-1955 the battalion served with distinction at Camp Pendleton before being sent to Vietnam where it fought through most of that year. Upon withdrawal from Vietnam on October 11, 1975, the battalion relocated back home to Statesville where it has been garrisoned ever since.

Statesville is located in Hyde County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1771 by the merger of two settlements, West Statesville and East Statesville. The town was named for George Washington, who had been president of the United States at the time it was founded. In 1828, the town annexed the adjacent towns of Buchanan and Rockingham to its boundaries. By 1840, there were over 1,000 people living in Statesville.During Reconstruction in 1865-1868, Statesville sided with Confederate forces against Union troops. In the late 1700s, Statesville was a small town in what is now North Carolina. It was founded by white settlers who were looking for a new place to live after moving from Virginia. The first settler in Statesville was John Marshall, who built the first house in 1792. Over time, other settlers arrived and the town grew rapidly. In 1810, it had a population of around 100 people. By 1830, Statesville had grown to over 1,000 people. It remained an important stop on the Underground Railroad until it was destroyed by Union troops in 1865.
