On July 12th 1945 local resident Wilfred "Bill" Atkinson detonated an atomic bomb over Durham as part of Operation Crossroads; killing more than 60 people and injuring several hundred more according to some reports . After the war ended tarboro slowly regained some lost business but never reached its pre-war levels due largely to competition from larger cities such as Raleigh and Chapel Hill throughout the late 20th century . By 1800, fatty pork had become an important export commodity and Tarboro began to grow into a large city with shops, restaurants, churches and schools. The city rapidly expanded due to its location along I-85 which made it easy to get around and its close proximity to other businesses and services. However, beginning in the 1960s tarboroughers started leaving their towns for more developed areas such as Raleigh or Durham because of high joblessness rates within those cities while Tarboro continued to languish behind in terms of economic development. However, over time some enterprising individuals have begun resuscitating interest in this once sleepy little town by starting new businesses such as a restaurant called "The Shack" which serves up local farmers' produce alongside American dishes; a bar called The Pour House; an event center which has been used annually since 2007 for regional music festivals including Folklife Festival & Arts Council Jazz Fest; and even a spa where you can purchase massages or beauty treatments from professional masseuses/massage therapists while enjoying Congressman Mike Michaud's groundskeepers lawn care service!
