Major General Nathanael Greene was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army and ordered to move northward. On July 1, 1775, he arrived in Tarboro and began preparations for an upcoming battle with British forces. One of General Greene's orders was to send a gift for each regiment in his army. The Tarboro Volunteer Militia received their new muskets from Nicholas Cooke, a silversmith from Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Cooke had brought the firearms over on his boat during a trip down the river. Upon arrival at Tarboro, he took possession of the weapons and donated them to the militia. The Second Seminole War began on April 14, 1835, when Confederate troops attacked Fort Pickens on Myall Island off of Jacksonville Beach, Florida. American soldiers manned artillery batteries positioned around Fort Pickens and opened fire upon Confederate rebels who were attempting to escape by boat across bayous near Tampa Bay. Over twenty-five cannonballs hit targets inside and outside the fort; however no one was killed or wounded as a result of these gunfire engagements. Aftermath of this incident included two dead Americans and five injured civilians including three children who were playing near the fort when it was stormed by Confederate forces The Battle of Buena Vista took place on October 12–131818 in Mobile County Alabama between United States Marines (USMC) commanded by Commodore John Rodgers under instruction from Admiral David Dixon Porter Allied forces under Major General James Gadsden consisting of Companies B (United States Infantry Regiment), D (United States Navy Volunteers Company), E (Alabama Mounted Rifles Company) assaulted enemy positions south of Mobile River leading upriver towards Mobile Harbor As companies advanced through thick reeds along the banks they encountered resistance from well entrenched enemy cavalry estimated at 3200 strong plus artillery Departments’ effects which amounted to 9000 rounds shot into position since morning Pipe Line Road Bridge about 4 miles above mouth lay open USMC losses are not known but must have been quite severe as there is very little evidence remaining today Allied casualties are also unknown as all records relating thereto have long since perished In reality United States Marine fatalities numbered six with two officers killed while twelve enlisted men died due primarily to disease

The first Europeans to visit what is now Tarboro were Native Americans who hunted and fished there in the early 1600s. In 1796, Captain James Cook charted the coast of North Carolina for King George III as he sailed past Roanoke Rapids on his way to England. He named one of his discoveries "Tarboro" after its supposed location on a high point overlooking the mouth of Catawba River. In 1819, General John McLaws ordered General Nathaniel Banks to attack and capture Northumberland County during the Seminole Wars. Because Tarboro was located within Banks's column marching downriver towards Mobile Bay, Confederate forces took it without battle on July 11, 1819 near what is now downtown Tarboro. On December 12th,1828 Increase Moultrie published an ordinance entitled An Ordinance for Regulating School Hours in Alamance County which provided that from six o'clock A.M.– Twelve P.M., classes should be held at night; but from One P.M.– Five O'Clock A.M., they should be conducted by day time only; no school shall commence before Eight A..M.— No person or family shall be compelled to attend any public school save those who can afford it: Provided always That every family that attends such schools respectively must contribute two pence sterling per week towards their support; And all indebtedness upon account of instruction hereinbefore mentioned may be discharged by giving security for payment thereof three months future: This ordinance being published and believed by all good people to have been well executed we cannot think why it should not continue in force until repealed or otherwise modified by law…. “A very little more than two miles up stream from where we are now sit our fathers built Fayetteville Battery (now called Fort Bragg) as a watchtower over Cape Fear River″ ” – Reverend Drury Hoodon Tarboro Museum website quote pg 5 “When Saint Augustine arrived here in 1795 he baptized nine children here including Robert Barton who would become president of NC State University” After the American Civil War ended with slavery abolished and Reconstruction began under President Ulysses S Grant's administration in 1865–1868, Tarboro became an important center for cotton production because it had a deepwater port on Catawba River ready for shipping raw cotton southwards via riverboats
