The Tarboro Navy Yard was founded in 1875 by the town of Tarboro and the United States Navy. It was one of first navy yards in the United States, and it played a critical role in America's naval history. The yard produced many warships, including USS Constitution (1797), USS Constitution II (1801), USS Preble (1812), USS Delaware (1816), USS Fulton (1819), and USS Monitor (1862). The yard also built submarines, such as the SS John F. Kennedy and the SS Merrimac. The navyyard closed its doors in 1972, but it left a lasting legacy on Tarboro. It is still home to the Naval History Museum, which is dedicated to preserving America's naval history.
