In 1912 the department moved to its present location at 256 Main Street. The current Chief of Police is Sergeant J.D. Hinton. By 1830 about 60 percent of the white population had left for better opportunities in slave states such as Kentucky or Missouri where cheap labor was available. began growing rapidly due to its location minutes away from major eastern railroads and its easy access to transportation via Boatman's Ferry which connected it with Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte and Jacksonville In 1840 Samuel Catlett became owner of Catlett's Mill which processed cottonseed oil into cooking fats and lard for export In 1844 George Catlett donated land adjoining his mill site for a courthouse square which served as the centerpiece of town until 1898 when the courthouse burned down In 1865 General Averill Harbison's Brigade attacked Confederate forces entrenched at Kinston resulting in many casualties including Robert Easley who commandeered one of Harbison's cannons during this battle Aftermath led him to rename Kinston "Amerytown" while Stonewall Jackson led Confederate forces against Union forces at New Bern (now Wilmington) resulting in more casualties including Easley who managed to escape He also donated lands adjacent to what are now McIntosh Road Baptist Church and Oneonta Road Methodist Episcopal Church so these two blocks stood until 1958 when both buildings were demolished for fire insurance purposes .The first black pastor in America preached service here on December 9th 1863 Rev Solomon Hogg officiated over whites congregation . Reverend Hogg traveled throughout late 1800s preaching sermons outdoors multiple times each day outside his home before moving inside occasionally when services got too noisy For almost 100 years Reverend Hogg remains oneof Chapel Hill’s most prominent voices today During Reconstruction Tomballstown slowly regained some level if prosperity returning jobs lost during the war while tax rates stayed low primarily because there wasn't much demand for goods brought back by freedmen After World War II things changed quickly with large numbers Clarksburgians coming through town seeking work creating shortageszoning availability ended adversely affecting businesses increasing poverty rates With few new businesses established since then another period characterized by joblessness followed reaching 50% still exists today but hope is emerging with some small businesses being started thanks largelyto community involvement
