Weddington, North Carolina is a small town located in Rowan County, North Carolina. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. Gourmet coffee has been produced in Weddington since the early 1800s. The first coffee house in Weddington was called The Coffee House and it served coffee to local farmers and their customers. In 1852, John Hennigan opened the first grocery store in Weddington and he started selling coffee from his store. In 1865, A.P. Howell introduced roasted beans to Weddington and this began the growth of gourmet coffee production in Weddington. By 1890, there were over twenty-five cafes serving gourmet coffee in Weddinton. The second wave of gourmet coffee production began around 1990 when Robusta Coffee Company opened its doors with its own roasting plant and equipment. This allowed for more consistent quality control across all of their products which helped make them more competitive against other grocers that were beginning to sell premium grade coffees under different names such as "Robusta" or "Brazil." Since then, many other roasters have followed suit including Blue Bottle Coffee Company (2005), Dark Horse Coffee (2008), Four Barrel Coffee (?, 2009), Decaf Nation (?, 2009) and Peet's Coffee (2012). Today, many people consider Weddinton to be one of the most important centers for modern gourmet coffee production because of the wealth of flavor options available within its borders as well as the high-quality produce that can be found hereabouts.

The first post office in Weddington was established in 1814. From 1889 to 1902, Weddington was known as “Weddingwood” because so many residents married there during that time period. The townsite of Weddington was named for Major General James Harnett who fought with distinction against the Seminoles during the American Revolution. On April 16, 1865, Harnett's column arrived at what is now Weddingtonshire Road after crossing over from Bladen County into Cabarrus County under cover of darkness while Confederate forces were celebrating their success at Fort Fisher near Raleigh. In 1895, Dr. Aimee White opened a dispensary in Weddingtonshire Road which became one of the largest medical offices in eastern North Carolina until it closed its doors in 1970 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Roy Cooper wednesday night
