The first white settler in Weddington was David Gentry, who arrived in 1839. The town rapidly grew during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location within a strategic trade route between Raleigh and Charlotte. By 1857, Weddington had a population of 1,200 residents and was one of the most important rural towns in Caldwell County. Weddington experienced significant growth during Reconstruction period (1865-1877). In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces at Cumberland Gap; after this event, many people from Weddington relocated to Raleigh to support the Confederacy. In 1867, General Robert Ewell's army invaded North Carolina and destroyed much of Whitehaven; as a result of this attack, many people fled to Weddinton for safety. Afterward, President Andrew Johnson ordered United States Marshals to start rounding up all Confederate sympathizers throughout South Carolina and Northern Virginia; as a result of these raids, many people from Weddington relocated back home. During Reconstruction era,Weddington became an important center for African American civil rights activities due to its close proximity to Raleigh and its large black population. In 1870-71, Weddington experienced another significant growth trend due to the construction of the railroad through Caldwell County.
