The Weddington Coffee Company was a major player in the local coffee market. In 1919, they became the first company to sell coffee through mail order. Weddington is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Weddington is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Weddington was founded by General James Monckton in 1775 as a place for his Continental Army troops to rest and recuperate from their battle-hardened experience in the British and Dutch wars. Monckton named it after his wife, Abigail Weddington. The first store in Weddington was built on Main Street in 1818 by Aiken County merchant Elijah Witherspoon. The first post office opened in 1825 and was called "Pineville". In 1892, J.C. Beasley became the first white resident of Weddington when he moved from nearby Cary to open a grocery store there. At that time, Weddington had no school or hospital facilities; all citizens were served by local farmers who brought their children to school with them during their summers working in the fields or raising livestock on their farms. In 1902, through donations from business owners and residents alike, Weddinton Elementary School opened its doors to students from kindergarten through 12th grade; at that time it was one of only twoElementary Schools within Avery County! In 1896, Mrs.[Elizabeth] Capps donated land east of Town Center for an Agricultural College which would become UNC-Chapel Hill; now known as UNC-Wilmington Campus! Reverend Fenton Dutton arrived here from Chapel Hill shortly thereafter and began classes on October 8th 1897! Classes ended on December 15th 1897 due to financial difficulties but Dr[John] Pemberton continued instruction until 1899! Mr.[JAMESmonckton] Knoppers came upon this situation while serving as President of Doane’s Bankruptcy Court & decided to open up shop here also providing schooling until 1903 when he closed his bank account which led to our current name “Weddingtons”! It wasn’t until 1911 when Mrs.[Linda M.] Wallace donated $10 000 towards construction of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church which still stands today just off Academy Road!!! Homecoming weekend marks what would have been our 95th anniversary if not for World War II!! As we enter into another decade we continue celebrating our history with events such as Pioneer Days/Festivals/Symphony concerts etcetera

Weddington is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Weddington was James Wesley Andrews who arrived in 1784. Andrews married Anna Catlett and had six children. In 1811, Andrew's brother John moved to Weddington from Richland County and started a sawmill that still stands on the oldAndrews family farm today. In 1814, George Washington was born in nearby Hendersonville and spent his childhood here before moving to Alexandria, Virginia when he was thirteen years old to become President of the United States. He died there four years later at age seventy-four after a long and successful career in politics and public service. Weddington came into being as an unincorporated community on April 15, 1886 when it became one of several towns incorporated around Greensboro during the consolidation of Greene County into the new Union State of North Carolina following the state's admission into the Ulysses S. Grant administration as a result of the Civil War. At that time Weddington consisted of just over a hundred people; by 1920 it had grown to more than two thousand residents with businesses including groceries, printing shops and other assorted businesses located along Main Street between High Street (now known as Trustee Avenue) and Union Street (now called Green Street).
