The Wilmington Naval Shipyard is a naval shipyard located in the city of Wilmington, North Carolina. It was founded by Commodore John G. They called this area New Sweden because of its excellent harbours—the only ones on that side of the river—and new land beyond what was then known as Carolina or Georgia (now Alabama). The first permanent European settlement was founded by English settlers in 1614 as Fort Christina upon high ground just east of present-day downtown Wilmington – site of today's First Baptist Church – after they abandoned their failed efforts to colonize present-day Virginia due to Native American attacks along the coastal areas they were trying to explore. There are numerous stories about how this fort came about: some say Portuguese sailors stranded themselves there while sailing back from Virginia; others say an Englishman lost his way near Cape Fear when he mistook Fort Christina for another Indian trading post; still others relate how Dutch colonists established a small community here but soon left because they found local officials too friendly towards them instead of taking care of their own constituents (a situation which would later happen with English colonists). When Spanish forces invaded North Carolina during King Philip II's War (1609-1618), Major General Gabriel de Montoya y Mosquera thought he could march southward through North Carolina against Spanish forces Operating from Charleston Harbor rather than venture inland where he knew very little about terrain, he sent two companies under Captain José Ruiz de la Cerda upriver past present day Orangeburg into Cherokee territory looking for passage overland through that country so that Spain could invade Florida without having any involvement in South America – all without realizing that Spanish troops based at Jamestown were also conducting raids into Cherokee territory! In retaliation for such audacious behavior by Ruiz de la Cerda, Montoya y Mosquera ordered his men not only not to cross over but also fire onto any Cherokee encountered roadside as they passed! After raiding Cherokee settlements near Elizabeth City until late May 1614, Ruiza de la Cerda discovered two small groups living peacefully among white people northeast of Elizabeth City when he returned home from his expedition early autumn following more than 350 miles unsupported travel across hostile territory! La Trinidad i Los Angeles thus became known respectively as Wilmington County or Jamaica Plain before Spaniards renamed it after Carlos III king Of Spain - San Fernando Rey de Galicia - partaking finally in good sense Latinized surnames beginning with Sr..
