Wilson is a city in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wilson County. The first permanent white settler in what is now Wilson County was George Thornton in 1785. He built a halting house on the Outer Banks and named it Thornton's Fort after himself and his son-in-law, John Thornton Sr.. A post office called Thornton's Fort was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1860, J.D. Pettit founded a cotton plantation near present-day Morehead City and named it Pettit's Plantation after himself and his brother-in-law James Pettit Jr.. In 1865, an act of the General Assembly changed the spelling of Wilson to "Wilson" so that all future namesakes would not be confused with their namesake cities (Thornton had become North Carolina's capital). The town started to grow rapidly thanks to new railroads linking nearby towns with Raleigh; by 1880, local farmers had amassed over 5,000 acres (2 km²) of land within the present boundaries of Wilson city limits. By 1900, about 30% of all agricultural production in Wilson County came from one or more small farmssteads located within its Limits; by 1910 such farming accounted for 85% of all economic activity reported by residents. During World War I, Wilson served as a training camp for infantry units from bothNorth Carolina and Virginia; many soldiers who fought on the war trail later became residents or Significant Others of Wilsontowne . After World War II ended there were steady waves of retirees moving into the city limits starting in the early 1950’s until recently when most people have left for other jurisdictions due to limited housing availability

Wilson was a small town in North Carolina during the 1800s. It was located on the Cumberland River and had a population of around 100 people. Wilson was first mentioned in 1772 when General James Wilson and his brigade fought against Cherokee Indians. In 1814, Wilson became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of 2,000 people. The town experienced some major changes during the 20th century. Starting in World War II, Wilson began to experience rapid growth as war production increased. However, this growth stopped in the 1970s when economic recession hit Wilson hard. Since then, Wilson has slowly begun to recover from its past problems, but still has many challenges ahead of it such as becoming more economically vibrant and attracting new businesses to its community.
Wilson was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Wilson, a Loyalist who had fled from the British during the American Revolution. The town developed around a small trading post and soon became an important center for slave trade and tobacco production. In 1819, Wilson was renamed to honor General Andrew Johnson, who had helped lead the United States into World War I. The town declined in importance during the decades after Johnson's death, but it regained some of its former glory in the 1960s when it was fashionable to visit for its stunning architecture and picturesque countryside.
