Navy gift history in Wilson, North Carolina goes back to 1892 when Admiral J.F. Smith ordered the construction of the USS "Wilson" at a cost of $1 million. The ship was launched on October 10, 1893 and arrived in Norfolk, Virginia on November 2, 1893. The first Navy trials were held on December 15-17, 1893 and the ship sailed foractivation on February 6, 1895. She was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet and decommissioned at Newport News Shipbuilding on May 4, 1896. The USS "Wilson" recommissioned as an auxiliary cruiser under command of Rear Admiral Wm Halsey on January 8, 1899 and she served with distinction during the Spanish-American War. On September 26th 1898 she patrolled off Havana Harbor while American forcesMLR 9th Brigade) faced General Manuel Emilio Pérez y Montenegro's forces in what is known asthe Battle of Santiago de Cuba or Battle of disembarkation [1]. After several weeks of battle it was decided that escort duty would be given her instead so she steamed back to Hampton Roads where she arrived on October 16th 1998[2]. On March 3rd 1902 "Wilson" helped escort President Theodore Roosevelt from Key West to Puerto Rico during his visit to celebrate Americas independence from Spain[3]. In 1916 "Wilson" assisted in evacuating British troops from Gallipoli Peninsula after their defeat there by Turkish forces[4], 1918 witnessed her maiden voyage as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Twenty one (DS21) which operated off Louisiana coast[5]during World War I; while also cruising along US coasts providing support for naval operations against submarines[6]; 1919 saw her commissioning as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Thirty two (DS32). Finally in 1923 she took part in Naval exercises off Guantanamo Bay [7] before being placed out of service at Charleston Navy Yardon July 1st 1924[8]. In 1939 USS "Winchester" made her way downriver to become flagship for destroyer squadron Fifty four (58), operating out of Jacksonville Floridauntil June 1940 when they moved upriver following orders to participatein Operation Neptune's Spearwhich aimedto disrupt oil shipments through Greeceand Yugoslaviato prevent them from falling into German hands. Wilson is a small town in North Carolina that was founded in 1819. The town is named for General James Wilson, an American Revolutionary War general and the father of Ulysses S. Grant. Wilson has a population of about 1,500 people and is located near Charlotte, NC. The first settlers to Wilson were farmers who came from nearby Kingston and Greenville. By 1829, the community had a post office, school, and jail. In 1831, the town was renamed Grantsville after General James Wilson’s son-in-law, Colonel John Cranch Grant. Grantsville became the permanent name of the community in 1835 when more residents moved to the area from other parts of North Carolina. In 1861, Wilson was incorporated as a city with a population of about 15 people. The city was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1863 while under Confederate occupation; however, it reemerged shortly thereafter and prospered until 1865 when it was abandoned due to Union military pressure alone. In 1870, Grantsville lost its status as an unincorporated community when it merged into Charlotte proper; however, it continues to exist as an older part of Charlotte today. Today, Wilson features several unique attractions including a variety of historical buildings dating back to the 1800s such as the original courthouse which is now used as library space; downtown which contains many businesses and restaurants; plus two golf courses – one located just outside town on Fayette Road and another located within town on Main Street – both popular for tourism purposes.

Wilson experienced some significant growth during Reconstruction; in 1876 it became the first city in North Carolina to have a streetcar system service. During this time period also, Wilson played a critical role in developing legislation that helped ensure voting rights for African Americans throughout much of southern America. In 1932, Wilson was renamed as part of plans to honor local dignitaries who had made important contributions to American culture during World War II.
