Wilson is a town in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Wilson was first settled by English colonists in 1735. The name "Wilson" was given to the spot by General Craven for his service as aide-de-camp to Governor Tryon during the war against King George II of Great Britain. However, no evidence exists that General Craven ever visited or knew of Wilson until after he had named it so. In 1819, Wilson formed a government with five settlements: Arden, Bellefonte, Fayetteville, High Point and New Bern. In 1841, Wilson became an independent village when it joined Wake County and removed from Johnston County. In 1886, Wilson organized its own school system which evolved into the present day University of North Carolina System schools today (UNC Asheville). The city's first post office opened in 1865 and closed in 1978; however, the referendum placed on November 3rd ballot failed to pass giving local control over post office service back to the townspeople through a charter amendment passed two years later.. A fire destroyed most of downtown Wilson on January 12th 1906 followed by a tornado that demolished much of the building stock including many businesses including banks and churches across streets such as Main Street and Union Avenue
