The first small batch coffeehouses were established in 1892 by two German farmers, Wilhelm and Emil Kapp. They opened the first Kapp Coffee House in downtown Bismarck and served single-origin beans from their farmhouse. Today, many North Dakota businesses offer their customers smallbatch coffee as an add-on to their menu or as a standalone product. The history of small batch coffee can be traced back to when Wilhelm Kapp was trading goods with his friends in Stockholm, Sweden. He brought home some roasted beans from his trip and learned about how to make Java coffees from his Swedish friends. When he returned home, he set about creating the first Indonesian roasting company and began exporting Java beans all over Europe and America. In 1918, he founded the world's second small batch coffee house when he opened the First Java Coffee House in Fargo, North Dakota. The success of this business led him to open more coffeehouses throughout Great Lakes country until his death in 1955.
