The Dickinson Army Air Field was first established as a military airfield in 1942. It became operational as an AmericanAAF airfield, with the 4th Bombardment Wing, Ninth Air Force, stationed there. The base was used for training of fighter and bomber pilots. In 1945, it was transferred to the United States Army Reserve and activated as the 7th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team at Fort Riley Kansas. It moved to Fort Bliss Texas in 1951 where it served as part of the 1st Cavalry Division untilactivated in 1958. The brigade then relocated back to Dickinson where it remained until 1973 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts.

The name "Dickinson" is derived from John Dickinson, an American statesman who served as the first U.S. Minister to France and then as secretary of state under President George Washington. The first post office was established in Dickinson in 1868. The township was organized on July 4, 1879, by order of the North Dakota Legislature.
