The Jamestown National Guard was activated on October 16, 1907, when the North Dakota Territorial Legislature passed a resolution authorizing the creation of an armory and national guard to protect settlers in North Dakota. The first unit to be organized was the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Infantry. On December 3rd, 1907, the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment Infantry was formed from elements of the 1st Battalion. On May 12th 1908, a resolution was passed by the territorial legislature authorizing formation of two more battalions-the 4th and 5th Battalions-of which only the 4th Battalion became operational. The 5th battalion arrived in Jamestown on July 10th 1908 and remained there until February 1911 when it moved to Fargo for training purposes. On November 20TH 1912, a new resolution passed by territorial legislators authorized formation of three brigades: A (1st Brigade), B (2nd Brigade), and C (3rd Brigade). The 1st brigade arrived in Jamestown on January 17TH 1913 while B and C brigades arrived in late 1913 or early 1914. The 3rd Brigade became operational on March 11TH 1914 with detachments arriving from Fargo, Devils Lake Sioux City, Rapid City and Valley City. In 1916-1917 A brigade detachment served with distinction as part of General John J Pershing's American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. In 1917-1918 GIs served with distinction in World War II as part of US Seventh Army's European Theater of Operations under General Patton's command
