The United States Air Force is a branch of the military that provides air support to allied governments. It has been in existence since World War II, and today numbers more than 350,000 active duty members. The USAF is responsible for providing worldwide airspace security, conducting bomber raids against targets inside and outside of the United States, as well as providing refueling and other support to coalition forces. Air force deployments have long been an important part of American culture. In Mandan, North Dakota, where the USAF operates two bases and employs over 1,000 people, this history is embodied in the deployment gift story of Air Force Sgt. First Class John Sorenson. Sorenson was born in 1963 in Mandan, ND., and raised in the small town until he was old enough to join the US Air Force at 18 years old. He served his entire four-year enlistment with the USAF before being called up for Operation Desert Storm in 1991. During that conflict he was awarded three Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars for heroism while serving as an aircrewman aboard a Boeing 707 aircraft carrier task force bombing rebel positions on Kuwait’s coast. After his service ended Sorenson returned home to civilian life but continued to serve his country by working as a truck driver for 12 years before being called back into service again during Operation New Dawn in 2001. This time he served as a ground controller on Iranian missiles testing range near Baghdad when he received news that his family had died during 9/11 terrorist attacks – just days after returning from Afghanistan! His experience as an airborne combat veteran led him to become headmaster at Hildebrandt Elementary School in Mandan after leaving military service – one of only two schools ever established by the USAF within its own base! He now oversees a school community which includes both children who have lost parents or guardian due to military service (the “Iraqi Kids”) and their siblings (the “Mandan Kids”), along with spouses or other relatives who are also affected by deployments; all students attend together regardless of location or language barrier! After completing basic training at Lackland AFB TX John was assigned to Ramstein AB Germany where he took part in Operation Neptune Spear flying reconnaissance missions over southern Iraq - reporting back first hand about weapons proliferation going on behind enemy lines! After almost 2 years deployed home again I received my call up tickets again Aug 2003 deploy 3 months later Oct 3 we went down there Feb 2004 Nov 5 I landed El Paso tx Feb 6 we assumpted our post 10 Dec2003 We arrived Baghdad Jan 2005 April 15th we got word Saddam Hussein had been captured Apr 16th my unit moved south 25 miles so I could go home

Mandan was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants and named for Ole Christian Mandan, an early settler. Mandan is located at (46.769989, -111.733609). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,813 people residing in the town. The racial makeup of Mandan was 97% White; 1% African American; 0.1% Native American; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%.

Mandan, North Dakota is a town in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The town was founded on July 24, 1881 by Capt. Elijah Bowers and James Wray as a trading post for the Sioux Indians under the name of "Hinckley". In 1885, Mandan became an independent village. It was named after Fort Mandan on the Great Plains in Wyoming Territory. Mandan has been part of the United States since it was organized as a state in 1889. The first U.S. Post Office in Mandan opened on December 3, 1889. The townsite which includes today's Mandan and Hinton were both donated to Cass County by Elias Bowers and James Wray respectively on November 15th of that year as part of their donation to the county to promote development within its limits. The discovery of oil in North Dakota led to significant growth inMandan during World War I as companies began searching for new sources of income for soldiers and their families living near military bases stationed there at various points along the Dakotas' east-west border with Canada . By 1921, when production had reach its peak due to advances in shale gas fracking technology, over 10 businesses had sprung up around town including two banks (the present day First National Bank and Commerce Bank), four restaurants/bars/grills (Wine Cellar & Grill - now known as Montana Grille), three hardware stores (Eddie's Hardware & Bargain Outfitters - now known as Eddie's Home Hardware) and one ice cream parlor (Chocolate Fudge Sundae Social). By 1925 services provided by churches such as First Baptist Church (Church Hill) had also grown into a full-time community presence while telephone service arrived soon afterwards from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company with business hours beginning at 7am until 5pm local time (). In 1948 an addition industrial park was added to help revive industry following heavy investment by American Electric Power Company president Franklin D Roosevelt who saw it then as an opportunity to increase domestic spending while keeping manufacturing jobs close to home (). At this point Mandan boasted six businesses employing over 350 people with potential annexed acres available for development yet little progress ever happened notable exception being plans for a high school which never came true either due lack of funding or concerned abouterving neighboring communities like Hinton which continued receiving large subsidies from ABP even after its acquisition by Warren Buffet's TE Connectivity company . Finally electricity reached town center circa 1951 when through installation of overhead power lines from Union Pacific Railroad main line just north of town ($3 million investment) city lights went out grid connected providing essential early warning system for emergency services during all types natural disasters throughoutCass County well into present day . For those reasons we believe our namesake may have something more do do with it than simply being named after one particular place or event however future research is definitely welcome!

In 1868, the United States annexed North Dakota from Canada, making it part of the new United States of America. The state was admitted to the Union on November 1, 1889.
