Mandan is a small town located in North Dakota, United States. The name of the town was given to it by the Sioux and French traders who called it "Mandanoua." The first European to visit the area was Pierre-Simon LaVallee in 1785, and he named the stream that runs through the town " la Mandan" after him. In 1848, Fargo became the capital of North Dakota and Mandan became a part of that city. The townsite at what is now Mandan was first surveyed by Captain George Caton in 1864. He named it Fort Laramie after General James A. Garfield, who had been president when Fort Laramie was built and also served as First Lieutenant of Company K, Seventh Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War. The post office at present-day Mandan was established on February 6, 1865, under authority of Order No. 201 from Governor John Dickey. In 1868, gold was discovered at Deadwood in South Dakota and over time many settlers moved there for opportunities for mining before finally settling in what is now Mandan in 1870. By 1886 there were over 1,000 people living inMandan with a population density of only 10 people per square mile compared to 100 people per square mile today due to development around town since then including new housing developments such as Alto Hills Apartments and Park Place Towers which have become some of North Dakota's tallest buildings.
