Enoch Emerson Beall was born in Williston on July 8th 1915. Enoch Emerson Beall was a rancher and banker who helped found Williston’s first bank before becoming a local political leader later that decade. He served as mayor from 1961 until 1966 when he was elected Dakota County Commissioner. In 1972 he became North Dakota’s first Republican Speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives before being elected Governor in 1974 after four terms as Mayor of Fargo. He would serve three terms before retiring at age 79 in 1982 following a term as Vice President under Ronald Reagan during which time he led North Dakota through some difficult times including government closures, high taxes and tough budgeting decisions necessary during what came to be known as “the Great Recession”. In his retirement he donated land near his home to become attached to North Dakota State University where he had already endowed money for use by both university professors teaching physics and mathematics courses plus research opportunities for students in various disciplines at NSU . This land now houses several buildings including Radcliffe Hall which is home to Anomalies Research Center funded by Enoch Emerson Beall Foundation , NSU Earth Science Building housing Earth Science Courses from Physics Department faculty across Campus ; Fairchild Theatre which also housesvarious music classes throughout Campus year round incluhud major symphonies offered each semester Spring Break Orchestra Seasonal performances ; ASL Language Training Laboratory housed within NSU English Department undergraduate level coursework ; ECOLOGY STUDIOS located adjacent NSU Physical Sciences Building housing research projects focused on Ecology ; finally NDSU Carlson Library named after him contains over 7000 books , numerous periodicals , databases , etc…. The first white man to live in what is now Williston was Hiram Gates in 1868. A post office called Williston was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1907. The community took its name from nearby Wellington, New Zealand, where an early settler named John Williston had married a local woman. Williston experienced significant growth during the 20th century; it became one of the largest towns in ND after World War II. The economy has grown largely due to agriculture and ranching; manufacturing declined during this time. However, recent growth has been spurred by new development including a oil refinery and several apartment complexes built downtown over the past few years.
