The United States Air Force has a rich history in Avon, Ohio. The unit was founded on December 18, 1947 as the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing, which was later redesignated as the 5th Tactical Fighter Wing in February 1951. On July 15, 1958, the wing absorbed the 2d Bombardment Wing and became an operational command structure of the USAF. The 1st TFW moved to Beechcraft A-12 Intruder aircraft in 1966 and began operations of this type of aircraft. On October 3, 1969, the wing activated its first jet squadron when it activated the 4th Jet Training Squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB. This squadron was equipped with F-4 Phantom IIs for flying jet training missions. The 1st TFW also flew KC-135 Stratotankers from Greenwood Field until they were replaced by McDonnell Douglas MQ-1 Predator drones in 2007. The Ohio Air National Guard's 9th Squadron, "The Flying Elks" was the first air force unit in Avon. The squadron was activated on October 1, 1941 at Avon Municipal Airport as a bombardment corps squadron under I Troop Carrier Command and served during World War II with distinction flying strategic bombers and medium bombers in the European Theater of Operations. On September 15, 1948, the squadron was redesignated as the 9th Bombardment Wing (9 BW) and relocated to Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio where it became an operational wingsman of the 6th Bombardment Wing (6 BW). Inactivated on August 30, 1957 when its headquarters moved from Dayton to MacDill AFB.

Avon is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Avon were French traders and missionaries in 1795. In 1802, David Ritchie built the first grist mill in what is now Avon Township. A post office was established in 1806, and by 1827 there were 9 businesses with a combined population of 117. By 1830 there were 36 businesses with 2,521 people living in 153 houses. In 1840 John Wirth founded Wirth & Wirth sawmills on the east side oftown (now North Manchester). This became one of the largest flour mills in America and conducted business until 1896 when it closed because of competition from larger mills near Cleveland. A post office called New Palestine was established at Avon on March 3, 1847; it was discontinued December 31, 1865 due to lack of residents. The first store opened at Niles Corners on May 15th, 1889 by Jeptha Haldeman under the name "Finch's General Store." The store closed October 6th 1912 after 143 years operation but its cornerstone still remains as part of today's downtown area mall which has been named for Haldeman's store - PNC Plaza
