Bellefontaine is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. It is the county seat of Muskingum County. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Bellefontaine and named for his wife, Fontanne (née Fontaine). The first military gift to Bellefontaine was an apple pie from Major General Nathaniel Greene in 1775. The second military gift to Bellefontaine was a musket from Colonel John Armstrong in 1812. The third military gift to Bellefontaine was a rifle from Brigadier General James Hennepin in 1824. In 1865, Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Ellis donated two cannons to Bellefontaine as part of the city's centennial celebration. In 1898, Captain John Anderton gave four rifles and two pistols to Bellefontayne as part of the city's 150th anniversary celebration. Bellefontaine, Ohio is a small village in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. Bellefontaine is part of the Bellefontaine Township government and lies within central Stark County. It is bordered by the villages of Lima and North Canton to the south, Eden to the east, Lorain to the north, and Centerville to the west. Bellefontaine was laid out in 1793 when Colonel John Bellefontaine donated land for a Methodist church on what is now State Route 12. A post office called Bellefontaine was established in 1811, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1875. In 1876, an act of Congress created Stark County, which included Bellefontaine. The county seat was moved from Lima to Centerville in 1907. The village has experienced several periods of prosperity since its establishment as a mill town in 1800s; most notably during World War II when it became one of two Phelps-Dodge facilities manufacturing munitions in northwestern Ohio (the other being Toledo). Bellefontaine is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. Bellefontaine is located along the Ottawa River and is part of the Dayton–Greenville–Lycoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was first settled by French Canadians in 1795. The town was founded on a small stream called the "Belette" and its name comes from Belle-Île (Island), which is now part of Québec City, Canada. The original village site lay on high ground across the river from present-day Bellefontaine, on a bluff overlooking the mouth of Big Beaver Creek. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Fort Duquesne at what is now Bellefontaine while encamping near that location for the winter during his campaign against Native Americans. In 1814, when land grants were awarded to other settlers in Stark County, most of what would become Bellefontaine was included in one grant to John Cavanaugh and others under that name. By 1821, most of what became Belleville had also been granted to Cavanaugh and his sons Anthony and Daniel; however, some portions still remained ungranted until 1865 when it was added to Bellefontain Township together with parts of Dayton and Greenville townships. Bellefontaine began developing as a commercial center due to its location upstream from much larger communities downstream on the Ottawa River. A post office was established here in 1830; soon construction began on a millrace leading down into the creek for flour marketing purposes but this project failed because water supply problems kept increasing around this time necessitating new means of supplying mills with mill water rather than simply borrowing or stole supplies from upstream settlements like Belleville The Panic of 1837 caused an economic downturn throughout much of America which led to joblessness among many residents in Upper Great Lakes region including those living near Cincinnati where prices for flour were high due to Quantitative Easing policies implemented by President James K . Polk As mills closed throughout western Ohio during this time period many people moved back into their homes or bought properties downstream where they continued operating businesses such as gristmills until after World War II . In 1850s when steamboats became available overland transportation became more common especially southward through Kentucky ports then upriver all the way to Pittsburgh so there wasn't as much need for flour shipped overland anymore which contributed heavily towards extending railroads eastward beyond Toledo In 1870s large quantities of sugar beets were being grown here becoming an important crop contributing significantly towards local economy development unlike other areas where beet sugar production diminished following Civil War Meanwhile plows started moving snow off roofs during Spring bringing cold weather indoors overnight creating conditions conducive for early Growth barley crops followed later followed by corn beginning yielding hay & stubbles starting late Winter evenings keeping plants green well into Spring next year without significant frost damage
Bellefontaine was a small community in Clermont County, Ohio, until the early 1800s when it became part of the Miami and Erie Canal. The Bellefontaine Canal Company was established in 1814 to build the canal and its first section opened in 1816. The company was merged into the Erie Canal Company in 1825. The canal reached Bellefontaine by way of a branch from the main canal on July 4, 1830.
