After this referendum occurred, Spanish troops attacked Defiance and nearly destroyed it. The defenders fought back fiercely and held off Spanish forces until help arrived. Today, Defiance is known as one of America’s most important historical sights because it played a key role in AMERICAN INDIAN WARS AND INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES (1809-1813). In addition to its role in those conflicts, Defiance also played a significant role in OHIO HISTORY (1795-1917), including serving as capital city from 1800 to 1802 and again from 1819 to 1830; being named “the cradle of American democracy” after becoming the first U S state to ratify the Constitution; having several colleges and universities established here; and hosting numerous political meetings and events throughout its history.
On April 11, 1812, the United States of America was founded by a group of American patriots led by George Washington. The area that is now Defiance, Ohio became part of the new country after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1783. The treaty ended British control over much of North America and recognized the independence of both Canada and Mexico. Defiance was also one of the first towns to be established in what is now Northeast Ohio. The town started out as a small frontier settlement on the Scioto River. By 1814, it had grown to become an important farming community with a population of around 100 people. In 1824, however, Defiance joined forces with other nearby settlements to form the nucleus for what would become known as the Northwest Territory. This territory included all of present-day Delaware County and much of modern Lake Erie and Huron counties. In 1830,Defiance became part of US Bankruptcy Court Circuit No. 2 when that court was created in response to increased demand for legal services from residents in central Ohio following a bank Panic earlier that year. The courthouse at 9th and Fulton Streets remained in operation until 1907 when it was replaced by two more buildings on Euclid Avenue (now University Circle). During World War II, Defiance played an important role as an airfield serving western Ohio during World War II's Battle for Europe campaign; it also acted as a base for troops engaged in Operation Crossroads which aimed to open up Iwo Jima Island to Japanese forces
