Fostoria, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,561 at the 2010 census. It was formerly part of the Dayton–Aliquippa Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Fostoria were traders and fur-hunters from what is now Quebec City in Canada who came in 1795. They named the village after Fortunatus, an Italian navigator who had explored the Great Lakes region some years earlier. When American Revolutionary War veteran Captain George Washington arrived in Fostoria on July 4, 1796 and learned about this settlement he decided it would make a good place for his headquarters because of its strategic location midway between Lake Erie and the anthracite coal fields of West Virginia. Washington ordered that Fort Wayne be built here as part of his defenses against British Attacks on the Northwest during the war (the area now known as Muskingum County was then under British control). In 1800 General James Wilkinson founded a small trading post near present day Wadsworth Avenue and located it on land donated by Solomon Hancock.
