Gahanna, Ohio is a city in the United States located on the southern edge of the state of Ohio. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. Gahanna is home to the University of Akron and other higher education institutions. The city's economy is based on manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism. The first European settlers in what is now Gahanna were men from nearby Youngstown who founded a mill on the Scioto River in 1795. It was not until 1803 that Gahanna received its charter as a village from then-Governor John Braddock. In 1825, Gahanna became part of Ashland Township when it was organized adjacent to Youngstown. In 1828, parts of Ashtland Township were combined with Summit Township to form Summit County. In 1830, John Saylor erected a logging camp near present-day Gahanna and began operating a sawmill that would become one of the most important mills in central Ohio until it closed in 1865. By 1840, Saylor had built four more mills - three gristmills and one washhouse - within his own township limits and by 1845 he had employed over 1,000 workers at his mills throughout Summit County. In 1850 Millville (now Unicoi) was established about 12 miles east of town as an agricultural center for surrounding villages; however no evidence exists that any settler ever named Millville after this location. In 1861 during the American Civil War, local forces under General Ulysses S Grant destroyed several bridges across the Scioto River between Kingman and Uniontown because they believed these crossings would be used by Confederate forces as supply points for their war effort against Union troops stationed nearby at Harpers Ferry National Battlefield Park near West Virginia’s Cumberland Gap National Monument (now West Virginia State Park). For years afterward historians have disputed whether or not this destruction actually happened; however there remains archaeological evidence demonstrating that some bridges did indeed fall into disrepair shortly beforeaken by Grant’s forces despite assertions to the contrary by Union commanders at Harpers Ferry park headquarters minutes before their execution – an event which has been called “the most infamous act committed against civilian targets during World War II” Gahannas growth following its incorporation into Summit County occurred primarily due to its position as an agricultural center for surrounding villages; however no evidence exists that any settler ever named Millville after this location In 1860 during President James Buchanan’s administration efforts were made to promote railroad construction through central Ohio through legislation known as “Lincoln Land Bill”; however without support from either major party both bills failed passage . After Lincoln died in 1865 all hope for increased rail traffic through central Ohio ended .
