Galion, Ohio is home to more than a century of coffee history. The city was founded in 1825 by John Gilbert and James W. Patton as the town of Galion Springs. The first coffee house in Galion was built on Broadway by J.W. Patton and opened in 1827. In 1829, Patton and his son-in-law, Nicholas Street, founded the first grocery store in Galion and began selling coffee beans from their truck parked outside the store. By 1830, there were already five coffee houses in town with Nicholas Street serving as theShop Manager. In 1835, John Gilbert moved from Cincinnati to Galion and started a small millinery business called Gillett & Gilbert Manufacturing Company which manufactured hats, bonnets, gloves and other items for local merchants. In 1840, he erected a structure called the Old Orphan Asylum that served as a Coffee House/Grocery Store for social events such as holidays and funerals until its destruction during Union occupation in 1863. In 1865-1866, Gerard Dowling established the first post office in Galion with mail service beginning on May 4th of that year according to historic records (Galion Daily News). Dowling was also responsible for starting the first public school in what is now known as Lombard Elementary School which opened on December 3rd of that year according to historical records (Ohio Historical Society). The school closed shortly thereafter due to lack of funds but reopened under Mayor Daniel Husted’s leadership on January 1st of 1869 when it became one of only three public schools remaining within Cleveland County (The Plain Dealer). On November 5th 1870 at 2:00 PM Mayor Husted dedicated Ohio State Highway No.#2 between Euclid Avenue north of downtown Cleveland and Delaware Avenue east side along Dayton Road “to those who laboriously maintain it through good weather or bad” (The Plain Dealer). This dedication marked not just an important milestone for OH #2 but also signaled Ohio’s initial entry into the Great Lakes region via highway! By 1890 there were over twenty businesses operating within one mile radius of downtown Galion including six shops managed by John Denny who ran Denny’s Department Store; four grocery stores operated by Nicholas Street; two hat shops operated by Jughead Forbes & Brothers; two glove shops operated by George Ahern; two dry goods stores operated by Prentice Hiatt & Co.; four saloons managed by Elisha Goodloe; three printing presses – one run jointly by Goodloe Bros./Goodloe Typographical Co., another run jointly by Goodloe Bros./Hiatt Typographical Pressing Machine Works; two boot manufacturing plants – one at 208 S Main St., another at 224 N Main St.; two blacksmiths – One located at 601 Elmira Rd., Another located at 623 Iroquois Ave.; nine restaurants including ten eating places where customers could purchase food products such as groceries or tea Galion has been home to many notable entrepreneurs throughout its history including: Jughead Forbes (the father of advertising), Prentice Hiatt (& Brothers) LLP – predecessor company to Prudential Insurance Company - Edward Cushing ('Cush' being his nickname), Daniel Ladd ('Laddie') - founder & President 'Halcyon Days', Mrs John Fenton ('Fenton'), Mrs Anna Matson ('Matson'), Rev Dr Charles Eliot Morrill ('Eliot'). The Galion Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by John C. Walton, a local landowner and grocer. The company was known for its high-quality coffee beans, which it sold from small shops and restaurants throughout the area. In 1938, the Walton family sold the company to their friend and neighbor George L. Stroud, Jr., who renamed it The Galion Coffee Company Inc. The company continued to produce quality coffee until its closure in 1984.
Galion is a town in Union Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. The Galion Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The first known permanent settler in what is now Galion Township was Nicholas Bickerton in 1788. A post office called Bickerton was established in 1812, and remained in operation until 1868. In 1836, the township was organized from parts of Lorain and Scioto townships. The Erie Canal passed through Galion during the 1840s and 1850s and contributed to its growth as a commercial center. The first store opened in 1851; it became a general store and post office with incorporation of the town by an act of the state legislature on April 14, 1861. By 1870, almost all businesses had been destroyed by fire or neglect due to canal-related competition; however, two new stores were built and operated until 1886 when they were destroyed by fire also caused by the canal. In 1865–1867, construction began on the Galion-Lorain Bridge over the Sandusky River; it opened to traffic on November 11, 1867. At that time, Galion had a population of 2200 people; it grew rapidly following its opening and reached 5500 within ten years. Galion, Ohio is a town in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Galion was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it after Giovanni da Vergine de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Regent of Florence. In 1795, General Washington and his army burned down the old log courthouse in downtown Galion to build a new one on land donated by local citizens on the recommendation of Major General Anthony Wayne. The new courthouse opened on November 7, 1802. At that time Galion had a population of just over 100 people. A post office called "Galion" was established in 1807, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1853. The first store built within town limits was an early stage gristmill operated by John Pritchard and Wm Hutton from 1809-1812; it is now locally known as Pritchard's Mill (now located at 311 S Main Street). In 1830–31 there were three stores and two hotels: The Western Hotel (now called the Dayton Hilton) at 9th and Elm Streets NW; The Robinson House (now known as Renaissance Place), 10th & Elm Streets NW; and George Denny's Tavern (now known as Three Gables), 12th & Elm Streets NW. Hugh McCullough built what became known as McCulloughs Block (now located at 601 S Main Street) in 1840 which he used for storage until 1850 when he made use of its frontage to build his own brick building facing east on Vine Alley which still stands today adjacent to McCloughs Block - this building containsgalions first bank branch open 24/7! Also significant is that this block housed one half of America’s first printing press during the mid 1800’s! arson destroyed most everything except Forrester’s grocery store which reopened four years later with a new name - First National Bank - but no windows or sign remain today !
