The city was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Kapp as a trading post on the Great Miami River. In 1851, Galion became a county seat and began to grow as a commercial center. The city's economy was based on fishing, boatbuilding, and shiprepair until World War II when it diversified into other fields such as tourism and manufacturing. Galion is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the river Maumee River. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Gallia County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Galion Township was John Fenton in 1810. By 1830, there were 7 settlers living in Galion Township and 2 living in Galesburg Township on either side of theMaumee River. In 1836, James Wirtz settled near present day Galion on land that had been donated by his brother John Wirtz to become a township. The first post office was established at Galion in 1840, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1865 due to lack of customers. In 1850, a gristmill was built along with other early industry including sawmills and a tannery by Nicholas Donoghue; this mill continued operation until 1907 when it went out of business. Donoghue also built an addition to his mill which became known as the Donoghue House after him; this house still stands today adjacent to the mill property line . A store opened at Galion between 1851 and1857 by Solomon Purdy serving local farmers and businessmen as well as travelers on their way to Dayton or Xenia for goods bought back at home during their travels across the Great Lakes region . The store closed about 1870 but reopened about 1890 under new ownership before closing again around 1910 . A post office called "Galion" was established at present day Galion on September 14, 1858 ,and remained open until January 15th 1861 due to mail being delivered twice a day from Xenia instead . A second post office called "Galesburg"was established at Galesburg sometime after 1860 but it also failed within 6 months because no one wanted to move there from village life back east The first school building erected within township limits (northwest corner of lot #3) was dedicated on October 3rd 1861 by Justice Edward Saunderson who officiated over education opportunities available through township schools starting then while he served as assessor just north of Wrightstown village limits - enrollment increased rapidly following this inaugural effort! With such quick growth throughout those early years schooling must have been an important necessity for many residents! Unfortunately various factors led to its demise not too long thereafter – fire destroyed all 3 buildings & library Nov 21 1895 ..... That building still stands today ! ................. Galion has seen some pretty interesting things over its history! From being a small community with only 10 residents when it started off all those years ago now boasting more than 1000 people who call themselves citizens today – what could be better?!? During the late 19th century and into the 20th century, Galion experienced significant growth thanks to its role as a center for manufacturing and commerce. Today, Galion is a small community with an active economy that is focused on restoring its past glory.
The first permanent settler in Galion was James H. Polk, who arrived in 1836. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of 350 people. It was named for General George Washington Galion, an early Ohio pioneer. In 1845 the town became a village, and in 1851 it became a city. The city was renamed Cleveland in 1902 after the then-president of Cleveland, Grover Cleveland (1841-1908).
