Garfield Heights is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name comes from Garfield Avenue and the Heights neighborhood that it contains. The first settlers in what is now Garfield Heights were Dutch people who arrived there in 1796. They named their town after General George Washington, who had died just two months earlier. By 1802, most of the original settlers had been replaced by Germans and Irish people. In 1830, a group of Englishmen came to Cleveland and found an area they called "Garfield". They started building farms there and selling produce to local farmers. In 1839, they built a gristmill on Garfield Avenue which became the town's first commercial establishment. In 1851, President James K. Polk sent General David Dixon to survey the territory that would become Cuyahoga County (including Garfield Heights). Dixon decided that parts of what are now Garfield Heights and Rockyland Township should be included in the new county because these areas were rich with minerals and timber resources. Accordingly, on November 16, 1851, the township of Rockyland was created out of part of Cuyahaga County while also incorporating parts of Garfield Heights into it. In 1865–66 when Cleveland was enlarged by annexing Summit Township to its north-central area – including much of present-day Erie County – much land within today's Garfield Heights was annexed as well; this included much of what is now Warren Township to the east and Brushy Hills Road to the west (along with some portions still located within present-day Cleveland). The annexation process for thoseADDITIONAL areas leftbehind in today's Garfield Heights took place over several years until all but about 5 percent of its current population lived there during that time period.– Today only about 1/3rd (2 out of 10)Of current residents live inside city limits
