Greenville is a small town in the northeast corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Miamisburg–Springfield, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Greenville was Captain John Smith on October 4, 1795. He named it after George Washington's home state of Virginia. The town site was surveyed by Captain Nicholas Cooke in 1803 and platted by him and others in that year. In 1811, Greenville became a township under the jurisdiction of Delaware County. Its first election took place on November 3 that year with James Auld as its first postmaster and twelve residents voting for one representative to the county board of trustees. In 1815, following Creek Indian War hostilities, President James Ketchum ordered all Native Americans living within 10 miles (16 km) of Cincinnati to leave their homes or face military reprisal. This order included Greenville; many settlers fled until early 1816 when militia forces arrived to protect them from possible violence by the Indians. When news reached Greenville that most Native Americans had evacuated, its citizens raised money and bought arms to continue resistance against what they saw as an unconstitutional white occupation. On February 14, 1817 – four days after General Andrew Jackson's invasion of Georgia – Congress passed an act providing for Cherokee removal westward into Alabama should that state be created out of Tennessee lands acquired during this period by the US government through purchase from Spain via cession in 1800 Cherokee leader Chief Osage had already decided to head north rather than east where he knew American forces would find him if he stayed put-thus ending any hopes his people may have had for peaceful removal southward onto Ulysses S Grant's new land grants in Oklahoma..
