Mount Vernon is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the southern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and within Greater Cincinnati's metropolitan area. The population was 21,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Vernon was Nicholas Applegate in 1792 when he moved from Rhode Island with his family to establish a new home on land grant from George Washington and his wife Martha Washington. The first post office was established in 1801, and by 1821 it had grown to include four villages: Mount Vernon, West Point, Easton and Newtown. In 1840, John Marshall founded Marshall College (now Northern Kentucky University) in Mount Vernon Village; it became one of America's first coeducational universities. In 1853, Robert Hays purchased 1/3 interest in Marshall College from John Marshall for $2,600 which he then donated to establish Hays Normal School (now Eastern Kentucky University). In 1865-1868 two groups of men – known as "The Forty" – began construction of a wagon road through central Ohio called The Great Western Road or simply The Road because its main purpose was connecting Cincinnati with points eastward along the Cumberland River valley and into Pennsylvania via Pittsburgh; they were aided by wealthy benefactors such as Andrew Carnegie and J P Morgan who funded their project with large donations.(1) In 1870 there were only 10 residents living in Mount Vernon Village; by 1880 it had reached 508 residents including 241 children under 15 years old! By 1900 there were over 2200 people living in Mt Vernon Village – more than half its current size! In 1910-1920 settlement increased even more when James Wirtz purchased 100 acres adjacent to present day downtown Mvdleton for parkland development that eventually became known as Wirtz Park after him and his wife Eleanor changed their name to Mrs.Wirtz Parks after she won an Oscar for her work on behalf of Negroes during World War II.(2) During this time many businesses opened up including Cement & Clay Works(later American Metals), banks like First National Bank (later bank nationalization), Masonic Lodge #5 (founded 1871), Presbyterian Church (1888), A&P grocery store(1910s-'20s), dance hall/protestant school (1925-1930s) as well as many homes built by taxpayers across denominations including Methodists(1899-1900), Baptists(1900-1945), Congregationalists('45-'1950)), Lutherans('50-'1960s))and Roman Catholics('1960s onward)). One example is Lakewood Baptist Church which served both local congregation and surrounding areas until 1984.(3) There are also several small shops open today like Sibley’s Antiques & Gifts(1910-) which still has its original inventory from when it operated out of Nathan Smith’s house next door(4)), Big Daddy’s Barber Shop ('60-'70)/'73 BBQ Shack ('70-) - one stop shop for everything related to barbeques - Shepherds Clothing Emporium chain started around '75 - dozens more examples can be found online if you Google “mountvernon village timeline” . All these businesses sprung up due to people wanting something they didn't have back then like easy access to transportation or good schools just outside their door! Today most all these businesses are gone but not before leaving behind some great memories like meeting President Barack Obama while serving dinner at Shepherds Clothing Emporium or watching fireworks over Olde Hickory Bridge while sitting inside Mr.Sibleys Antiques & Gifts !

Mount Vernon is a historic town in andaround the city of Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The population was 17,507 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Cleveland were French traders from Quebec City. They arrived in 1695 and founded the trading post of Fort Rouillé on Saginaw Bay. In 1714, they founded what became Mount Vernon after purchase of land by George Washington and his brother-in-law Thomas Paine. The original fort was destroyed by the British in 1763 during their military invasion of America. In 1801, Mount Vernon was made an incorporated village with a name that reflected its origins: "Vernon Park". It increased to a borough in 1825 when it annexed much of Euclid Township east of I-75 (now University Circle). The largest annexation was that which added to the city including most of Warrensville Heights and portions of South Euclid and West Side streets between Akron Avenue and East Third Street (now Eastland Avenue). In 1941, Mount Vernon became an unincorporated community once again as part of the Cleveland Municipal Improvement District. On July 15, 1990, it amalgamated with nearby Lawrenceburg to form downtown Lawrenceburg within the boundaries defined by ZIP Code 45469
