Springboro is a town in Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. Springboro was founded by George Washington Carver in 1875. It was named for General James H. Carver who served as the commander of the Union Army during the Civil War and also served as Superintendent of Schools in Holmes County from 1879 to 1886. The first post office in Springboro was established on November 15, 1876, by contractor John Sibley. The name of the town may be derived from springing up near where it now stands, or from "springing out" when water can be found underground near some early settler homes. In 1888, A.W. Woodward built his home just east of town on what is now known as Woodward Road and became one of the most influential men in town politics and business until his death in 1924. He had helped found many local businesses including the Springboro Glassworks which still exists today and produce windows and other glass products; trusteeships were created for him at both Holmes County School District No 2 (now part of Delaware County) and Franklin Township School District No 1 (later part of Stark County). A fire destroyed one third of downtown Springboro on October 14, 1907; however this did not stop local businessmen from rebuilding quickly with help from national insurance money provided through a program called "Building America". On December 5th 1905 a new frame courthouse replaced an earlier wooden structure that had been burned down two years earlier after being used as a public storage shed by vandals while Springboro residents were away at Christmas vacation! New civic buildings such as a library (1898), Machine Shop & Foundry (1916), Post Office & Hall (1920), Mrs Kapp's Restaurant (1927), First National Bank building (1929) were all designed by architects Edward Lathrop Bechtel Jr., Alfred Parsonage Halls Ltd.,and George Wickersham Dempster with assistance from their partners Crampton Brothers & Sons Incorporated On July 6th 1951 President Harry Truman visited Springboro to sign Executive Order 9348 giving authorization for construction within five miles taxiway airport would be established adjacent to current city limits
