The Navy deployed gift history in Ardmore, Oklahoma in 1951. The gift history started with the USS Independence (AGI-4) which was donated by the Mayor of Ardmore to the Navy on December 8, 1951. The USS Independence was used as a training ship for the Naval Aviator School and later served as part of the Amphibious Forces in Vietnam. It is now permanently moored at Naval Station Tulsa. The next Navy deployment occurred in 1959 when the USS John F Kennedy (CVN 77) was donated by Mrs. Kenneth Euless to the Navy. The JFK served as a presidential yacht and was often used for ceremonies and visits by President Eisenhower and his family. She is now permanently moored at Naval Base Norfolk, Virginia. In 1969, the USS Constitution (CVN 66) arrived from Long Beach, California and became permanently moored at Naval Station Tulsa after being donated by Mrs. Florence Buchanan Ketchum. Mrs. Ketchum had been living in Tulsa since she moved there from Wichita Falls, Texas in 1967 when she married Captain James Tompkins III who served as Commandant of Cadet Training Command at NAS Whidbey Island until his death in 1971. AsCommodore William Crouch Jr., USNR said about her: "She is one of those ships that you never forget - not because you see her every day but because she has always meant something special to somebody." In 1984, the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) arrived from Seattle and became permanently moored at Naval Station Norfolk after being donated by Mr./Ms.(Mrs.) Loren A Rauschert who had been living on board since 1978 when they bought it from decommissioned destroyer escort DDG-1126 which had been located off Jacksonville Florida since 1975 while serving as part of Destroyer Squadron 9th Fleet based out of Jacksonville Harbor . They were responsible for rescuing crew members of merchant vessel SS America whose engine room caught fire during Hurricane Joan while underway off Cuba on August 25th , 1985 making her one of only two vessels ever to be awarded this distinction during their careers with navy service! Ardmore, Oklahoma is a small town in east-central Oklahoma. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification Cfa), abbreviated "BS" on most maps. Ardmore is the county seat of Muskogee County and is located about halfway between Tulsa and Ponca City. The first people to live in what is now Ardmore were the Arapaho who hunted there during the height of their influence in this area. In 1834, James Ketchum donated land to the town for school purposes and named it after himself, James Ketchum Place or Ardmore Landing. In 1907, Lillie Dickson opened her general store in downtown Ardmore which became one of the largest general stores in eastern Oklahoma. She also served as postmaster from 1922 to 1925; she was elected by her constituents and not by the state government. In 1916, Mrs. Burt Henson founded an agricultural college called Stroud Agricultural College which grew into Ardmore State University today. After World War I ended with Armistice Day, many veterans returned home from Europe and found themselves without jobs or money for new purchases so they started businesses such as grocery stores and vehicle parts dealerships that continue to this day in downtown Ardmore. In 1957, Main Street was widened from two lanes to four lanes making it a major thoroughfare throughout town as well as being used for local racing events until 1984 when NASCAR moved its race track out of town altogether due to costs associated with staging such large events outside of Tulsa at that time). The original Main Street Bridge still stands across US-81 just east ofUS-281 junction near Parkview Elementary School; it was built in 1931 by J P Morgan & Sons Construction Company under contract with the Department of Public Works having been funded by a $1 million bond issue authorized by then Governor Dewey Landon prior to his becoming president on December 12th 1926

In 1881, a group of men from Ardmore, Oklahoma began to clear land for a new community. The town was named after the nearby mountain range that overlooked it. The first settlers were soon established and in 1885, the town had its first election. The early years of Ardmore were very rough and there were many robberies and murders. However, the community quickly became known for its sobriety and hard work ethic. In 1907, Ardmore was founded as a city by an act of the Oklahoma Legislature. During World War I, Ardmore saw some incredible growth; the population tripled from just under 1,000 to 3,000 within six months of the war starting. After the war ended in 1918, things started to slow down but not before they reached their peak in 1921 with 4,000 people living in what is now downtown Ardmore. Since then though things have slowly started to unravel; over time crime has become more rampant and social institutions have been eroded. Today there are only around 1,200 people living in downtown Ardmore while most of the rest live elsewhere within the city limits or outside it altogether.
