Choctaw is a town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. It was founded in 1907 by Choctaw Indians. The population was 1,361 at the 2010 census. The town of Choctaw was established on the east bank of the Muskogee River west of present-day Guthrie. It grew up around a Methodist Episcopal church and school which were located on what is now US-27. In 1907, residents of Choctaw petitioned the state legislature to be given city status and they were granted this request in 1912. The first mayor of Choctaw was Wm Hargrave. In 1915, six men from Wichita Falls, Texas came to Oklahoma to prospect for oil near present day Guthrie and they began building an oil rig in what is now Choctaw Township on the east bank of the Muskogee River. They named their rig "Cherokee" after their Cherokee Nation homeland in Georgia where they had been living since 1868. However, within two years efforts by local farmers to market their crops resulted in production nil and so Cherokee ceased operations during World War I; it recommenced production shortly before hostilities ended in 1918. After the waridental production resumed as a result of new drilling techniques but again no results were achieved until 1927 when heavy rains caused water levels along the river to rise which led to new drilling areas being developed including that Near Pawhuska area known today as Cherokee Fields (now part of Tulsa). The first gas station opened at Indianola Avenue & Haskell Street in 1925; however due to high prices for gasolineChoctawGas never became very popular with its citizens who preferred buying fuel from Wichita Falls or Tulsa dealerships downriver on Haskell Street - also home to Piggly Wiggly restaurant from 1926 until it closed circa 1979 Due largely to this preference many businesses closed up shop between 1925-1929 leaving only one business open - Joplin Chevrolet which operated from 1929 until its closure circa 1979 In 1932 Mayor Hargrave announced plans for downtown development which would see construction begin on a park/ promenade extending along HaskellStreet from Indianola AveTo US-27 just north of Exchange Place renamed “Choctawa Park” while other central parts of town such as Mainstreet would remain undeveloped It wasn't until 1945 that a fire destroyed most of downtown following an accidental start while workers were putting out some kindling near City Hall Today much evidence remains remaining both architecturally and historically significant within CHOCTAWTownship including: 1) The Methodist Episcopal Church built c1892 still stands today inside the original built structure with additions made over time (including an attachedMethodist Chapel added posthumously c1960) 2) The First National Bank & Trust Building (c1920s), 3) Independence Hall/ hardware store (c1930s), 4) Two Schools - McAlester High School opened Sept 1939 andstill operates today as CHOCTAW Junior High School & Choctawa Intermediate School 5) One Business closed c1978 - Joplin Chevrolet
