James Atherton, acquired title to land east of Claremorle Creek that would become Claremore Village, he changed the name to honor his late wife's father, General Andrew J Grant (1814-1885). The village became an incorporated municipality in 1907. Thebamateaux National Monument lies within Claremorle Township and includes parts of both Clarenthony and Guthrie counties near Interstate 44 approximately southeast of Tulsa and north of McAlester. As one of America's poorest communities during prohibition years ™ , Claremorle experienced serious economic decline beginning with prohibition until repeal led to increased alcohol sales and jobs in nearby Tulsa throughout most of the 1920s; however some residents did manage to improve their lives through entrepreneurship or by borrowing money against future opportunities while others lost all their assets due to prohibition enforced tough lending practices which also caused deep regional depression nicknamed "Oklahoma Depression".
