Del City is a small town in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stephens County. The name "Del City" comes from the Spanish word "delincuencia" ( Thieves). The town was founded by George W. Brown in 1881 as a station on the Union Pacific Railroad. It became a small community with only about 100 people when it was given its current name in 1907. The town's first store and post office opened on October 7, 1881. The first settler to arrive in Del City was George W Brown Sr who came from Missouri in 1881 and homesteaded land along the railroad near present-day Del City. In 1907, the town changed its name to honor Field Marshal John J Pershing who had fought at Sada Creek during World War I and then served as governor of Oklahoma before becoming General Ulysses S Grant's secretary of war after he took office in 1869. As part of his administration, Pershing ordered that all Indian properties be sold and all citizens were required to leave their reservations within two years or face execution by imprisonment or deportation under lawlessness laws then existing throughout Indian Territory which included most of what is now Oklahoma and much of Texas including San Antonio de Bexar Mission where today's downtownplex stands
